Welcome to the third series of my career and life coaching blog! This time, I want to share the benefits of happiness at work and why it is so important, given we spend most of our working lives in the workplace.
To those of you who already love your jobs—I am thrilled for you! It takes time, energy, and commitment to find that special place to call 'home.' Some of us may not have always been as lucky; perhaps we have 'survived' burnout, toxic workplaces, controlling and demanding managers, and disengaged teams. For some of my clients, it isn't until they take a break or leave their role that they realise just how unhappy they have been, discovering that they have been on auto-pilot for a long time to keep themselves in a job.
Fay Phillips-Jones (CIPD, ICF), a qualified HR & Recruitment professional who founded Coaching with Fay, provides her professional insight and advice on the topic below:

How long are we actually at work?
The average UK employee will spend roughly 3,515 days of their life at work—this doesn't account for those of you who also put in hours tapping away at your keyboards and phones until silly o'clock.
This adds up to 1,795 hours per year and just under 90,000 hours (84,365 to be exact) in a lifetime. Just to reiterate—this doesn't include days and weeks where you work more than you are contracted to, which in corporate roles is pretty much the norm. Scary thought, huh?
In today’s fast-paced world, the quest for a fulfilling career is more than just a trendy notion; it’s a vital aspect of personal well-being and overall life satisfaction. As a career coach at Coaching with Fay, I’ve seen first-hand the transformative impact of being in a job that brings joy and fulfilment.
Here are five great reasons why prioritising happiness in your career is crucial:
Boosts Productivity and Creativity
When you’re passionate about your work, it doesn't feel like a chore. Happiness at work fuels motivation, leading to higher productivity levels and enhanced creativity. Research from the Harvard Business Review supports this, showing that happy employees are 31% more productive and three times more creative than their unhappy counterparts.
Enhances Mental and Physical Health
Job satisfaction directly impacts mental and physical well-being. Chronic stress and dissatisfaction can lead to burnout, anxiety, and various health issues. According to a study published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, individuals who reported higher job satisfaction also reported better overall health and lower stress levels. A fulfilling job promotes a positive mindset, reducing stress and fostering a healthier lifestyle. Happy employees are more likely to engage in healthy habits, contributing to overall well-being.
Strengthens Relationships
Working in a job that you love positively affects your interactions with colleagues, clients, and even your relationships at home and with friends and family. Happiness is contagious; a positive work environment encourages teamwork, collaboration, and better communication. Research by the Gallup Organisation shows that employees with strong workplace relationships are more engaged and productive. Outside of work, your positive attitude and reduced stress levels enhance relationships with friends and family.
Encourages Personal Growth
A job that aligns with your passions and interests encourages continuous learning and self-improvement. You’re more likely to seek out opportunities for growth, develop new skills, and push your boundaries. This not only makes you more competent in your current role but also prepares you for future career advancements. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, individuals who find personal growth opportunities in their work report higher levels of job satisfaction and overall well-being.
Leads to Long-Term Career Satisfaction
Ultimately, being in a job that makes you happy is key to long-term career satisfaction. When you love what you do, you’re more likely to stay committed to your career path, leading to a more stable and fulfilling professional journey. This stability can also translate to better financial rewards, as dedication and performance often lead to promotions and raises. A report by the Society for Human Resource Management found that job satisfaction is a significant predictor of employee retention and long-term career success.
Conclusion
Finding a job that brings happiness is not just about earning a wage; it’s about enriching your life. At Coaching with Fay, I believe that everyone deserves to thrive in a career that aligns with their passions and values. If you’re ready to embark on the journey to a more fulfilling career, I am here to guide and support you every step of the way.
